Santo Domingo.- Felix Jimenez, Tourism minister, said Samana will be a reference point for tourism in the country when the new airport in this city is inaugurated in November 2006. The new airport, located in El Catey, was funded with an investment of 67.2 million dollars. The 90,000 square meter infrastructure will be capable to run Boeing B747's or Airbuses A-640's, and could handle traffic in the order of 1,500 passengers per day. Inauguration next November of the new international airport in Samana sets a hallmark in Dominican tourism, according to minister Jimenez. 3,500 hotel rooms going on to 6,000 by 2008, a marina, a golf course and two weekly cruises as of next February, also add to the positive perspectives. “This paradise of virgin land and rich ecotourism attractions will be accessible to the world round as of this year, thanks to the new airport located in El Catey,” underscored Jimenez. In addition, Jimenez and Andreas Denecke, president of Global Aviation Enabling (GAE) affiliated to Lufthansa, signed an agreement that augurs a new airline company: Aerolinea Dominicana. Though details of the operation are unknown, it is expected that the new airline will fly between Europe and the Caribbean, in addition to intraregional flights.
